Glued sand
For this project, I created a representational map of Italy out of sand using glue on a canvas. I decided to do Italy because of my Italian ancestry. To create this, I would first put down a layer of glue, then cover it with copious amounts of sand. I learned this process as I went along, since, as before, I have never used sand before. To start this project I began by tracing out Italy onto the canvas. This was easier said than done because the canvas was much larger than a printable size. So I had to measure out the proportions of the map against the canvas and use an iPad as a backlight to trace the canvas onto 4 pieces of 8"x11" paper. Then I could transfer from there onto the canvas. To get the line traced down I had to cut along the lines and then draw the outside of the paper, which was quite time-consuming and a hassle but it worked. After this, I could get right into the sand. The sand that I used for the land of Italy was from Winslow Park in Freeport. The blue sand I used for the water was from Amazon. My process was to first make a layer of glue, as evenly as possible, and then sprinkle the sand down on top. It would take about a day and a half to dry, then I could move on to the next part. On the first attempt when I was working on Italy, I found that the glue hadn't been even when it dried so I decided to add another layer on top. This proved as a poor choice because the second layer made large bumps on the first instead of one smooth layer. I didn't find this to be a particularly large issue, just a learning curve. So I decided to use a grate sander to try to smooth the bumps out, but it smoothed it out, it made the sand white. At first, I didn't like it, but now, I think it looks like mountains, which is pretty cool. After this, I could then move on. The water went decently smoothly, and I made sure to add more and less glue in different parts of the canvas to make the final product smoother. The rest of the sand work went pretty smoothly. Though, in the end, I decided to sand over the whole thing as I had done before, and it added nicely to the final product. This project was pretty fun, but I don't know if I'd do it again. A lot of waiting for the glue to dry but that's just part of the process. If I was to continue this project. I would probably do it over, and make it a bit more detailed in general. I might also make it on a smaller scale. And separate Sicily from Italy.
