Artist Statement

To create this piece, I used Photoshop to recreate an image of me and my friend Adam in a cartoon-like style. By making groups of colors that resemble that area, I achieved a representative image in a new style. This project relates to my life because it is a work of art with me in it. As you can see, I am in a suit, this is because on the night of the image, it was the homecoming dance. To create this project, I used photoshop to piece together an image using a simplified color palette. The process to create this work was very time consuming. All together the project took around 40 hours. I had to draw out a group of the photo, and use a color that represents that area to fill it in. To start this project, I took a picture of me that I would like to make a design on. Next I got got right into designing the work. I started on my face, and it didn't take long to pick up the process and style. Though the process was very time consuming, it was smooth and didn't have many hiccups. After my face, I did Adams. After that I moved onto my body. I did my shirt which went nicely, then started on my blazer. The blazer took a bit to get right since I had to close off all the respective areas. I also wanted to add the creases and folds in it to make it a bit more representative. After the blazer I moved onto my pants, and followed the same process. Next, I moved onto Adams body. This was a bit challenging since he is in black, and there was not a ton of contrast between the layers and colors. Though I found some highlights and filled them in. This went smoothly for the most part besides trying to distinguish between the colors. After this, I did the hands and arms and added the shadow on the wall, which I think looks pretty cool against the white now that I'm done. When I thought I was done with the colors, I removed the background and found that there was a white line between every color which I had to remove. This was not the easiest thing, I tried to keep the general shape of the color that I had, but I also knew it wouldn't terribly effect the image if I broke the boundaries a bit. In doing this, I realized that I actually missed a lot of spots that I meant to color. I started with the faces, which wasn't awful, then moved onto the bodies which was certainly the easiest part of it. Finally, I had to do the hands, which I knew wouldn't be very easy with all the tiny sections of color. I decided to do my hands first, which went pretty well and I like the way the came out. Though, like the rest of the project, it took time. Then I moved onto Adams hands. I really don't like how the one pointing came out. I think it looks too realistic for the style personally. But everything else looks pretty great I think. After doing this project, I am really happy with the way it came out. And I wouldn't be surprised if I find myself doing another project later on in the same kind of style. If I was t continue this project, I would fix Adams hand, though I honestly don't consider it to be that big of a problem.
