Artist Statement

For this project, I created a political-esk work of an Afghan man in blue and red with an outline of Afghanistan behind him, with the word WAR. This project relates to my life because I think it portrays a belief of mine. It shows the effect of the United States on civilians in Afghanistan. But I also think it can be interpreted in different ways. To create this piece I used photoshop to design the man, and the outline of Afghanistan on a separate doc, then combined them in Illustrator and added the WAR. I continued with the same process and style of my last project, but I used some techniques I learned in the last one to help me create this piece. For instance, instead of going through the entire design afterward and fixing all the lines between the sections, I just added a dark background which made the lines virtually disappear. To start this project, I began with my idea. I knew I wanted to do it digitally, but I needed an idea. At first, I want to have skeletons, money, and politicians involved. But after some thought, I decided to do a more time-sensitive topic. So I found a non-copyright image of an afghani man and started brought him into photoshop. Well, actually I put it in Illustrator, but after consulting Mrs.Medsker, I found out that you can't do something like this in Illustrator but could use it late for the words. So once I got it into photoshop I could start. The whole process went pretty smoothly and only took about 3-5 hours for the man, which I was much more capable of doing than the 35-40 for the last project. After the face, though, I could start in Illustrator. So I put it in and found a good font for the 'WAR'. This part wasn't very hard but after looking at it when I thought I was done I realized that it didn't really look the way I wanted it to. So I decided to go back into Photoshop and find a good outline of Afghanistan to make a fill of. I did this and it went decently, and then I could bring it back into Illustrator to add to the piece.
