Artist Statement

For this project, I created an abstract jungle with acrylic paint on a stretched canvas. This project relates to my life because I for one like jungles, and I like the colors I used. To create this work I used a palette knife and acrylic paint to spread out large blotches of paint onto a stretched canvas. I expanded and discovered process of experimentation with this work because I have to extensively used acrylic paint, and certainly not in this way. To start my project, I began by spreading out thin but dense layers of paint onto the canvas to make a backdrop for the jungle. I mainly used black with some white and hints of more vibrant colors. When this dried, I could start making more representational splatters of paint. I'm not sure exactly what order I put the paint down in, but I tried to include small shrubbery in the foreground, along with hanging palm trees, which are more apparent, and a waterfall. I also included some fruits, perhaps bananas due to the yellow color. Then, for the background I made a sky, with hints of yellows, pinks, reds, and oranges within the blue. This was pretty much the project. For me, making abstract work means just letting your hand flow and see what comes out. perhaps you have an idea or technique in mind for the final product. But the process to arrive there is unpredictable. In the end, I am very pleased with how the painting came out. Though, I would have preferred to do the project with oil paint because of its shiny quality, though I think it still looks nice. If I was to continue this, I wouldn't change a thing. And I would be happy to do another one of these, maybe with oil paint, and include some other techniques like splatter paint.
