String Theory
String on nail board
For this project, I used string and a board with nails all around the edges to create a bee design with stars. This project relates to my life because I think that bees are very important to our ecosystems and humans altogether. I used colored embroidery string and nails on a piece of wood for this project. Since I have never used string before this, I created and discovered the process as I went. I basically started from the beginning with no idea of what I was going to do and tried to make it work. I learned lots of things in creating this piece, particularly patience. To start my project I had to figure out what iI was going to do the string on. After being given some options by Mrs. Medsker, I chose the wood. The first thing I did when I got the wood was sketched down my idea to help me line the string up and make it look similar to what I was going for. My original idea was to do my face with some extra aspects like stars around. Next, I could start putting down the nails. For this, I made a centimeter border around the whole thing, then, made a mark every half-centimeter. The marks were where the nails were going to go. Then I drilled pilot holes for all the nails. When all the holes were drilled, I could put the nails in. I ended up putting in one nail every other hole because one, I was going to run out of nails, and two, I realized that I didn't need that many nails anyway. When all the nails were in place, I could begin the string. I started with black string and just put down a bunch of string to make a general outline of the face. This would also let me wrap the string in the middle of the board later on. When I figured I had put down enough string, I began with the colors. this process was pretty dull and steady, and to finish it I added four stars around the head. After this, though, I decided I didn't like it and completely removed the face. Then, I decided to do a bee and began with that. The process again, went smoothly, until when I was onto the main part of the body and ran out of string once, then again, and then finally finished over the course of a few days. After this, I was done, and to finish, II added a white border around the bee to make it pop a bit more. Overall, this project was pretty boring, though I did like using a different material. I learned a lot about string, as one may, and I like the overall outcome of the project. Though, I definitely would not do this again I don't think. Unless I was doing some kind of geometric design. If I was to continue this project I would add a few more stars and probably some more string just to fill the background. But other than that, I think it came out nicely.
