For this project, I was to create a design revolving around or including circles. With this in mind, I decided to draw a night time mountain scene with a Volkswagon van in the front. This project relates to my life because I like Volkswagon vans, what can I say? And I've seen images similar to this before, and as a kid, and I've wanted to create something like this for a while now. To create this piece, I used graphite pencils to sketch out the design, and then a variety of Sharpies to to finish the work. I experimented with my process by drawing inside a circle for the first time. I'm not usually confined to a space like this, so it was different. To start my project, I first used a rule to find the middle of the paper. Using the middle as a guide I used a compass to make a circle with an 8 centimeter radius. Next, I began the sketching process. I started with the mountains, and knowing that I wanted to have the shadow design that is shown, I made sure to give plenty of space on either side of the crease. Next I had to decided whether to go with a river or lake, with some kind of waterfall. Or a road with the van that you see above. Obviously I went with the van, so I drew out the road, and then the van. I really like how the van came out in the end, and I think its my favorite part of the whole design. After this, I could begin the line work with the Sharpie. I did the mountains and the road, but as I was doing the road I made it a bit too thick. After this, I drew in the shadows of the mountains with ruler and a pencil, then went over with the fine point sharpie. After the shadow, I was on to outlining the van, which was a little stressful, but it came out nicely. Next, after the van, I made sure to add some stars in the sky, and the moon. And then I could begin filling in the sky. I had to go over a few times to get an even covering, but it worked well. When it came to getting the small spaces between the stars, though, I used the Artline fine-point, but I found that when you go over it with a thick sharpie, it messes the tooth of the paper up and gave it a look that I didn't exactly like. Next, I lined the moon and the craters, and to finish the project off, I decided to make the circle a bit thicker. I used the compass again to do this, and it was a bit tough since the sharpie didn't fit in the small hole for the compass. As I was dong this, the compass slipped and I accidentally made a large line outside of the circle. This was not ideal, but I realized that I could just cut it out and it would look fine. My initial plan was not to have the physical paper in the shape of a circle though. After this, I was done. I like the way this project came out, as I said, I've been wanting to create something like this for a while, but just never came around to it. I think my next moves would definitely be to color it. Probably with colored pencils.
