Artist Statement

For this project, I created a political-esk cartoon revolving around the big business idea of Dupont and global warming. This project relates to my life because it reflects an idea I hold around big business and global warming. To create this work I used colored pencils after outlining in graphite pencils. I continued to expand my knowledge of colored pencils while creating this work. Adapted the work when I was finished to fit the style. To start the project, I first came up with some ideas. I thought first of the Brunswick hazing scandal, then of Dupont and global warming. I decided to go with the second one mainly because it was a larger scale issue and also because I had a better idea for it. Next, I got right to sketching it out. I started with the caricature then moved to the earth and fire. When I was done sketching I could start coloring it with colored pencils. I made sure to burnish by pushing hard and coving all the white space. The coloring process went pretty smooth, I did the fire first, then moved onto the Dupont guy's face, for that I shaded and burnished to get an even covering. I honestly did not think the shading would go as well as it did but I think I did okay. After doing the face I did the body and then finally the earth. Then I was done. I'm not too keen on the way it came out honestly. I think if I was to continue this project, I would do it again and learn how to draw a decent caricature.
