Artist Statement

For this project, I created Yosemite Valley out of alcohol markers. The circles were the main prompt, How can you turn a 4x5 grid of circles into art using your creativity? With this in mind, I decided to turn the inside of the circles into Yosemite during the day, and the negative space Yosemite at night. With the two sharing the same landscape. This project relates to my life because yosemite is somewhere that I am very interested in visiting. I love its natural beauty and I plan on going there sometime soon. To create this piece, I used Blick alcohol markers on bristol board. I used skills and techniques I learned the last time I used these markers to make this work. This project went much smoother than my Donate Life project which was the main learning experience. To start this project, I first sketched out Yosemite Valley from a photo online, then took a compass and made 20 circles in the pattern shown above. From here I could jump right in. At this point I thought I only had 90 minutes to complete this project, but it turned out later that it was actually due at the end of the week. So at this part of the project I was basically scribbling to get it done in the time. Though I was rushing, I was also making sure that it looked the way I wanted it to. I started with the tree in the bottom left and the terrain around it. The whole project went pretty smoothly from here, I just cranked it out and got it done in one night, which I don't think I've ever done with a project like this. I also didn't have a reference for the night so i was just going off what I thought it would look like under the moon. Speaking of the moon, one of my favorite parts of the piece is how there is a common moon/sun in the night vs day. I thought that was pretty clever. Like I said the project went very smoothly and I just got it done. I really like how this project came out, it honestly might be one of my favorite projects this year, and that says a lot for how long I spent on it. If I was to continue this project, I wouldn't change anything. Though if i did it again, I would probably rever day and night because I like how the daytime looks more than the night. though i think that would have been more challenging to do under the time circumstances.
