Independent Study

exploring the climate crisis, environmentalism and art

Mid-Year Update

The primary focus of Independent Study thus far has been examining the ways in which humans destroy the Earth.  Subjects such as deforestation, clear-cutting and fast fashion have been explored.  I seek to ask gentle questions through my art, as I find that beauty can go a long way in speaking to people.  Depicting only atrocity, as I very well could, would only drive people away from my work.

This semester I also explored new mediums, learning how to screen-print t-shirts, use gelatin printing and independently taught myself to sew.  Much of my creative expression this semester was spent simply exploring and learning, allowing me to hone my skills while developing a guiding question for my Independent Study.

My goal for the comng semester is to create 15 original works of art, that seek to make the viewer question the ways in which humans negatively impact the Earth.  I am hoping to use new mediums that better connect my materials to my subject matter—such as using plant-based inks, or recycled paper.
