Butter Dish
10 x 4 x 3
Glazed Ceramic
For this project, I was inspired by the ceramic forms that the ceramicist Julia Galloway makes. I was drawn to the utilitarian nature of her work, and the detailed drawings on those pieces. In my own work, I tried to create a utilitarian piece that had drawings on it that pertained to its use. I chose to draw kitchen utensils on the lid of the butter dish and mimic a tile floor on backsplash on the bottom.
I am relatively pleased with how this piece came out, as the simple form looks pleasing to the eye. I was able to create an even, smooth texture on the clay, which allowed drawing the designs on with a cobalt pencil to be relatively easy. The clear glaze (SM-10) went smoothly over it without any smudges. However, I am frustrated that I was unable to create a perfectly flat bottom on the dish, which I am planning to correct with either felt or a small wooden foot with superglue.
