Landscape Investigation 7

Tundra

Watercolor, Ink and Gel Pen on Watercolor Paper

In this piece I am trying to capture the blending color and beauty of the high arctic in autumn. I myself always wish that autumn was short and gave way to winter, because I hate November rain, and in the arctic autumn gives way to winter in a matter of days. I like the idea of an incredibly short window where the colors are at their most vibrant. This piece is a little past that, I think, but that's ok.

To create this piece, I used watercolors, micron ink pens a white gel pen. It was made on watercolor paper.

This piece was an exploration into color. I started initially with just the watercolors, so, for the first time in this investigation, color truly guided the entire piece. While I wanted to stay true to the colors in my reference images, I allowed myself to stay loose and be relaxed, so the pinks in the foreground, while not completely intentional, were just part of the process. Then with the linework I experimented with stippling beyond just shading, capturing some of the texture of the bushes.
