Summer Vacation

9 X 18

I created this piece, Summer Vacation using a 2-B graphite pencil, micron pens, prismacolor markers and prismacolor pencils. First, we were instructed to take a picture of a hallway within the school, and then carefully scale that image up onto our paper using graphite. Drawing the hallway, even from a picture, was a difficult task, and the most time consuming. After I had created the image of the hallway onto my paper, I began adding imperfections into the lines, adding in graffiti and nature along the way. Once the more creative pieces had been sketched in, I broke out the micron pens and inked some of the graffiti as well as the grass and flowers. Color came next, and on a whim, I drew the colorful design on the viewers right, which I quite like.

This artwork was technically challenging, requiring much use of the ruler and t-square, and though perspective has never been my strong suit, I am happy with the result, though I feel I could've perhaps done better. Looking over the artwork of others, I realize that incorporating plants was a redundancy, because a 'plan invasion' was a common theme. However, I did my best to create an interesting composition, juxtaposing the natural world with the brightly-colored highly-toxic spray of graffiti. This natural world is best represented by the falcon just about to catch the mouse, ironically almost directly across from words reading "Meat is Murder." I chose the title Summer Vacation because this image is of a school hallway, but has been taken over by lush greenery, a symbol of summer, and bombastically colored graffiti, both representing the freedom of summer in two very different ways. In addition, it appears some attempts have been made to corral both graffiti and grass, in the way the grass is cut in very straight lines as well as how some of the graffiti has been painted over, symbolizing the control within summer vacation.
