From the Rocks

Ink and Colored Pencil on Illustration Board

8 X 5

This piece is inspired by a view of both Damariscove Island and Fishermans Island from Outer Heron Island in Boothbay, Maine. I really love Outer Heron Island, it is uninhabited and the rocky shore can be circumnavigated in an afternoon. There is a thin little cove on the islands western shore has a sandy beach and a good rock to jump off of at high tide, and this piece is a view looking toward the other islands from that rock, at mid to low tide (note the seaweed). I spend summers in Boothbay, so this piece really connects to memories I have of perfect summer afternoons.

This piece was made using technical ink pens and prismacolor colored pencils on illustration board.

At first, I only wanted this piece to be in colored inks, and it was going to be a revision of a previous piece titled Across the Sound but as I began to draw I felt the need to incorporate color. While I am very familiar with colored pencils, I would still consider this piece to be a breakthrough one because I was able to balance both the linework and colored pencil to create a piece I am proud of.
