Foundations of Art

Foundations of art was my favorite class this year. It combined something I really like to do with a teacher and peers I liked. The issues came from within, and at times I would be too critical of my work or get frustrated and give up. These moments often came during the middle of the assignment, and through the year I found that it was best to just try to power through without stopping, or try to remind myself that I always had difficulty around the halfway point.

This course opened my eyes to the different forms 2D art can take, and my favorite projects were often those, such as the Zine and Collage assignments. While not completely without bumps, I didn't have anyone to compare my work to, so when I got something I liked, I stuck with it and didn't immediately decide it wasn't good enough. While I have experimented with zine-like comic books, but never liked the result and I have never really done a collage I am happy with, so these two projects were the first time I ever got a positive result using these mediums. I really enjoyed these projects because I was pleased with the results.

But wait! I refuse to stop talking about my good art. I also really enjoy the negative space drawing because it gave me an opportunity to revisit the 'machine' drawings I used to do when I was eight or nine. Eight-year-old me would've jumped up and down with excitement if he knew he would be able to make something that cool.

Now, because I am a results oriented person in some ways, my least favorite assignments were the ones that required use of supplies s that I was not familiar with, namely the painting and charcoal assignments. This is an obvious flaw because I will never grow as an artist if I refuse to try new things and am willing to go out on limb sometimes.
