Sky Lines

12 X 4

Ink and Graphite on Illustration Board

This piece was inspired by a panoramic photograph taken by my father of Grimes Cove in Boothbay, Maine. This is a view that is very familiar to me, because I have spent summers in Boothbay since I was a very little kid. I thought that the the distortions that panoramic photo produced provided an interesting composition, so I chose to incorporate the 'cloud lines' and the dark trees in my final piece.

I chose to work in pen for this piece because I felt the little details of rocks and pebbles could be best captured in pen. I was hesitant to use color because I feel like a lot of my pieces recently have been black, brown, green, white and blue, and I wanted to get away from the color palette, and from color in general. Instead, for some added value, I chose to some light graphite, which adds depth. I often find that I am reluctant to erase my original graphite sketch because I like the added little lines that my loose sketches often have, so I left the graphite under my pen and even added a little bit more.

This piece was based upon a photograph, so it did not change all that much from the initial sketch. I chose to include the graphite halfway through, which added depth and got me excited about finishing the piece.
