Landscape Investigation 8

Dead Wood

16 X 10

Sharpie on Paper

This piece comes from a fascination I have with the desert. I wanted to explore the idea of death in the desert, and I focused upon the dead tree as a subject. I liked the idea of creating horizontal flow throughout the piece, so I utilized many horizontal lines, and made the trees appear to have been twisted by the wind over time.

I used sharpies to make this piece, and while they are not archival, they provided a way to make much larger marks than I have been throughout this investigation.

This piece definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, as I am not particularly familiar with sharpies, or using thicker lines to create a less detailed and more graphic piece. While working, I felt as though the trees needed more detail to draw the viewer's eye, so I used a finer sharpie to create more interesting linework within them. I regret make this choice as I feel it makes the center of the piece to busy compared to the rest of it.
