Planter
4" X 4" X 9"
Glazed Ceramic
For this assignment we were instructed to create a ceramic piece inspired by one of the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. I chose to create a piece that interacted with three, those three being earth, water and air. This piece is a planter, meaning that it will hold earth and give life to a plant that uses air and water to grow.
The lines on the pot itself mimim the texture of bark you might find on a stump, while the base plant mimics a blue-ish moss. The planter as a whole is modeled after a stump sticking out from moss, such that the plant growing from it is like a plant growing out of a rotten stump.
I made this piece using slab construction. I rolled out a large slab and used it for everything. First I cut a large rectangle and let it get leather hard before bending it into the walls of the pot. Then I set the cylinder on a slab and traced around it to form a base, before slipping and scoring to attach it. To make the base plate I cut a slab into a circular shape and pinched the edges up.
For the glazes I used PC-20 over PC-59 on the pot and PC-20 alone on the base plate.
