In these three studies, I focused on a single thing in each. In Study of Hand I tried to create the illusion of movement by using strong, messy lines. In Study of Ears I paid close attention to detail, adding the shadow created by my mask strap. In Study of Water Bottle I tried to capture the battered look, where the cap doesn't go straight on anymore. I chose to draw a closed fist, with strong messy lines, to represent how frustrated I get when drawing hands, and I chose to study my ears because they are rather large and prominent on my head, and often the source of attention from my friends. As for the last study, I did a water bottle because it was what I had, nothing more.
Throughout these studies I used a 2B graphite pencil, along with a Prismacolor Col-erase blue colored pencil in the ear study. I began with Study of Ears paying close attention to detail and challenging myself to try to get the shapes and shading right the first time, and not erasing, just starting over on a new ear. This way, I could take what I learned about how my ear is shaped from the first try and apply it to the second, getting a more accurate result.
Out of these studies, Study of Hand is the most sketch-like, and as discussed above, this was done by intention. To create the feeling of movement I used heavy, sketchy lines, anlong with rough shading, while still trying to pay attention to highlights and shadows. In Study of Water Bottle I used cross hatching (not the greatest decision) to show the shadow created by the water, and in Study of Ears I used value to show the shapes of my ear.
