In the Shade of the Saguaro

Ink on Illustration Board

8 1/2 X 8

A few rough study sketches

This piece is an exploration into the lines and subsequent shapes of the desert. I tried to capture the scale of the desert with the warped sky, and by making everything curve towards a central point, the was pushed towards the line between the mountains and the sky in the center of the piece—an effect that I was quite pleased with. This piece was also an exploration into line work, I used pointillism, cross hatching and hatching extensively, creating a contrast in the piece between harsh, strong lines and soft dots.

This piece was created using technical ink pens and an ink brush pen over a graphite sketch. It was made on illustration board.

Prior to beginning this piece, I sketched pretty extensively and planned out far more than I usually do. I focused on both the composition and the design of the cactus as well as the sky and the angle angle at which the cactus leaned.
