Hills

9 X 7

Colored Pencil and Gel Pen on Bristol Board

This piece was an effort to push my technical abilities in rendering mist and creating depth, while at the same exploring the recurring subject of layered hills building up to the mountains. To me, these layered hills suggest waves, and the white gel pen in the foreground only furthers that idea. The mist builds this idea further, suggesting the spray off the top of the 'waves' as they roll in. I chose the color pallette to play with the idea of patterns in nature, and show the duality between the mountains and the sea.

For this piece I used Prismacolor Colored pencils and white gel pen. It was made on bristol board.

While at first I wanted to play with depth, as I worked this piece evolved to all about the mid-ground and highlighting the misty and bright nature of it. I chose to outline the foreground with white gel pen because I thought it allowed the foreground to stand out without becoming the focus of the piece. The mid-ground focus leant itself well to the composition because it naturally fell in the center and in the middle. The slight rise on the right side of the piece in that mid-ground is also situated along one of the third-lines which helped to make it stand out more.
