The House was filled with tons of political chatter whether it was about Economic recovery, retirement security, or even just regular house bills. Everyone is always talking about something related to politics.
For instance one person says, “How are we going to settle the issue with house bills.” another says, “Forget that we need to do something for the economy”. I sighed loudly and everyone looked back at me “what’s the matter Nydia?” I replied “Y’all are bickering like idiots”.
After hearing all of these statements I go back to looking at the pile of paper set in front of me. I think back to how I’ve always had a passion for political science. This desire began when I was in college.
I then became a member of the House of Representatives as a Congresswomen. When I got the news that I have been elected to become a member I was in complete shock and really excited. I had some issues at first but then I got the hang of things and it really wasn’t all that difficult. One of the greatest challenges I faced was most definitely housing issues. Having to debate over affordable and accessible housing is not my idea of a good time.
As a Congresswomen I reintroduced bills in 2021 because in Washington D.C there were many people trying to address the housing loan discrimination against racial minorities “this whole thing against people of a different race is just wrong” a person said “that’s why this bill exists so we can prevent that” I replied. Reintroducing bills also came with a cost of increasing the bill that would increase transparency and accountability in the lending process. The bill was later Titled Home of Loan Quality Transparency Act of 2021, which would require lending instructions and credit unions to provide public disclosures regarding peoples mortgages and home equity lines of credit. This requirement will eliminate discriminatory lending practices.
At one point I felt as if I was being used and as if people were taking advantage of the fact that I'm a member of the house. I felt like I should stand up for what I think is right so I
put on a brave face and proudly said “Let me tell you I’m nobody’s puppet” and that was one of my most iconic quotes. I have had many times where I simply felt overwhelmed or I felt like I wasn’t good enough. Soon I realized I wouldn’t have been elected to be a member if I wasn't good enough. I enjoy the place I work at in New York’s 7th district. Where I have been working since 1993.
