Today was the day. My first ever “concert” since the start of the pandemic. Since there are a lot of restrictions put down due to COVID I decided to have a live concert. This isn’t like any other concert though, I plan on performing on a flatbed truck and driving through New York City. I took a deep breath and stepped onto the truck. I heard the engine roar and looked at the time to make sure I was on schedule. Looking around I saw that both Sech and J Balvin were ready to go, so I gave the signal to get going.
It was 6:00pm when the truck finally started driving. I took a deep breath and prepared to sing my song “Si Veo a Tu Mamá,”. As the truck began to drive through the Bronx I noticed a small crowd forming. There were tracks placed along the sidewalk of the path the truck would be driving through. Ironically, they were bunny tracks that followed the bus’s path. I felt the wind in my face as the bus sped through traffic, fans running after in an attempt to keep up. Music was blaring along with car horns and sirens. It still feels weird, performing on top of a moving truck but it’s the best I could do. This almost feels like an extreme sport, having to duck under traffic lights and tree branches in the way. Hopefully I don’t get hit by anything, if I do the final destination is the Harlem Hospital so that works out. We stopped at the traffic light and I took a moment to notice everything around me. Judging by the amount of greenery and the different smells of Dominican dishes we had reached Washington Heights.
I took a tiny breather and began to sing the next song. I couldn’t focus too much on what was going on around me, performing and trying to dodge objects in the way. I slightly waved to everyone running behind the bus and started singing one of my favorite songs “YHLQMDLG” The bus started moving again it caught me off guard, slightly pushing me forward. The crowd was getting larger and larger as the bus drove past different neighborhoods. It surprised me, how some people that started the crowd managed to keep up. More time had passed as I performed. I finally noticed that we were starting to pull up to the Harlem Hospital.
This was the moment, the reason I did this. We pulled up in front of the Harlem Hospital with a ginormous crowd surrounding the truck. With all the noise and lights, workers inside the hospital started walking out to see what was going on. I cleared my throat and began to say “I want to pay respects and thanks to those people who have sacrificed their lives, giving it all for the health of this city. With a lot of faith in God, I sense that good things are coming. I know we are going through very difficult times, but I have hope that people doing things with their heart, spirit, faith and hope, we're going to move forward." I took a deep breath, and performed the final songs with all my heart. These people should be thanked for all they have done, trying to help people during the pandemic. I wanna do as much as I can, and showing appreciation to the frontline workers is one way. I finished the last song and took a moment to process everything. This was kind of difficult, considering how I didn’t have an actual audience, and I didn’t really want to do it. But this is the new reality and people need something like this at the moment.
