I paced back and forth as I waited for the women to come. Usually I am a calm and patient woman, but today I have this feeling and it’s making me nervous, but I don’t want to show it. After some time the women finally arrive. “Oh, I see lot’s of the women that we have invited have shown up and they aren’t alone.” I said to myself aloud. I thought that since they were bringing the men in their family the meeting will be a little more difficult to persuade people into helping the women in the community because some men can be very single minded, but if some of the men agree with us then we can get more people on our side.
Once everyone settled in the room and found a spot to sit I walked up the creaking stairs onto the platform, took a deep breath and walked to the middle so they could all see me. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen,” I said, “I gathered you all here today to help with some of the troubles that the Argentina government is complaining about.” I slowly moved my gaze around the room as everyone stared back at me waiting to continue. “The troubles are that many women in our beloved country are having trouble surviving. Some of their troubles are that they don’t have the same rights as we do or they can’t get the medical or financial attention that they need.” Murmurs go up in the room. Soft whispers wondering if I am right or agreeing to what I have said based off of other news that they have heard. “I brought you all here today to hear my plea of helping these women. Please help me help these women so that they can get the care that they need. I would like to...” I get cut off by someone who asks why we should help them instead of letting them deal with their own problems. And of course the person who asked was a rich white man. I sighed wondering if anyone would be able to listen to every fact and detail of what was going on in the real world without altering the information in their head. I picked my sentence back up saying “ That’s a good question sir. Yes, I believe that we should help these women who are living in a harsh environment because if we don’t do something about this then someday what is happening to these women will start happening to everyone. Maybe even to you.” Some people gasped, others nodded in agreement. Of course there were still some people in the room who needed more convincing though. A young lady in the back of the room was wondering if the women were really worth all the trouble. “I believe that if we don’t help those in need then we are worse than some of the people who put these women in these positions, and the same thing could happen to any of us.” “ And if we don’t set an example here, things today may never change for the better in the future.” I stated.
“So, if we help people today, things in the future can change?” someone in the crowd asked.
“Yes, I just need your help and your influence so more and more people around the world can do similar things where they live. But I can’t do any of this without your help.” I look at the time as people discuss their thoughts and opinions between one another. “ Excuse me ladies and gentlemen, but I think that I have taken enough of your time today. If you fill out a form that my associate is passing out and put it in the box in the back on your way out that would be very helpful. I hope to see you all very soon.”
As everyone left my associate and myself were the only people left in the room. I pulled the box off the table and set it on the floor. “Let’s see what everyone has chosen.” I said to my associate and started grabbing a paper to read it. When we finished two hours later, 60% of the people who were in the meeting agreed to help us. 25% said they needed more time to think and the last 15% said they don’t want to participate.
“This is a good sign,” my associate said, “We can start the project.”
“ Yes, this is a good thing.” I replied. Soon the women in Argentina who need help will have everything that they need to survive, I thought to myself, soon we will have all the help we need to accomplish our goals to help Argentina become a better place. The following day we started to plan on how we would run things. I was to be the president of the party, My associate the vice president, and the people to be our responder, maintainers, and our keepers. We had everything in motion after a few attempts and fails at the plan. We finally had everyone who participated ready. The political party continued on for years. We helped women all over Argentina with health care, voting, finance, bills, and much more. In return we got repaid with kindness. The government appreciated what we were doing and allowed us to continue. There were some times where we struggled with a situation but we eventually passed it and found ourselves back on track. Argentina became a much happier place now that they didn’t have to worry so much about the women living in the streets. The lives of many people seemed to brighten each day. But nothing lasts for long. Once I found out that I had cancer I could no longer attend to my duties. Soon the political party dispersed. I hope that for the time that the political party was around that we made the future for Argentina better. For now people will have to just wait and see.
