Roberto Clemente was both Latino and black. He was born on August 18, 1934 and died on December 31, 1972. Roberto Clemente also played 18 seasons of professional baseball and during his time playing he helped the people in need between seasons. The first baseball clinics in Puerto Rico were funded by Roberto Clemente. When Roberto Clemente died his family had one last fundraiser to give to the hospital to create a new wing
Roberto Clemente was first drafted to the Dodgers and had a signing bonus of 10,000 dollars. When the season was about to start the Dodgers wanted Roberto Clemente to play in the minor leagues for his first season. MLB had a rule that a team could not play a player down in the minors if they had a signing bonus of $4,000 or more. Also during this time Roberto Clemente was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates .During Clemente’s season he could not eat with his teammates in the restaurants so he would have to stay in the bus and eat there. Between all of Clemente’s season he would go home and play games over in Puerto Rico. He would also spend time with his family.
Towards the end of Clemente’s career he started to help people in need. An example would be the people of Nicaragua that were devastated by the earthquake. Roberto Clemente had a big impact on the kids in Puerto Rico since he was the first Puerto Rican to play in the major league. For the things Roberto Clemente did he earned respect from many people in the world by helping people in need. Roberto Clemente would also spend his offseason in Puerto Rico since that is where his home is and his family. During that time he would also play baseball there for the Santurce Crabbers. Roberto Clemente in his offseason would work with the kids. He would work with the kids by showing them how to play the game of baseball. Sometimes Clemente would let underprivileged kids in Puerto Rico go to his baseball clinics for no charge.
Roberto Clemente was the person looked up to when they grew up from the mid 50’s to early 70’s. The morning Roberto Clemente died while on a plane ride to Nicaragua where the people were devastated by an earthquake. The family of Roberto Clemente did not stop helping others in need by still fundraising money for the people in need or people who have been devastated with natural disasters. The fundraiser that happened right after Roberto Clemente died was a fundraiser to build a new pediatrics wing for the medical center. Roberto Clemente was also one of the reasons baseball changed over the years.
Roberto Clemente was also one of the few people to be inducted into the hall of fame before retiring. The way this happened was by he had a huge impact on baseball right after he died they inducted him in the Hall of Fame. He also has an award named after him that is given to a single player in the league between 29 other players that gave back to the community. Roberto Clemente also has a day dedicated to him that lets all players in baseball wear the number 21 on their jersey.
