On the morning of the battle of Saipan there were many soldiers that were scared.I was too but I want to fight for my country. When the doors opened there were bodys all over the beach and the smell of death was everywhere. The sand was blood red because the Japanese slaughtered all the soldiers all around me. The sand had bugs that were eating all the dead bodies. What was happening feet like it was a tap to kill all of us from the Japanese. But I keep punching through thoughts to get us out of here. I keep running to take cover but the Japanese guner is tracking me and taking most of my soldiers' lives and I am hiding. That is not want a soldier wants in a fire fight. But then I saw my team getting attacked by some Japanese and I wanted to help. I went to my team and helped get cover and to find a way to get the Japanese out of here.
The plan was to punish the Japanese out of there gunning around. That was what the chief said. But before we got out there was a grenade but I saw one of my friends on top of the grenade. He was the type of guy who thought of others before him like what he wanted to save the other from his life. I was sad and mad about what happened but I snapped out of it because I wanted some revenge for him. But the plan may happen then there will be not more of my friends either. The Japanese were stopping us from reaching them. I went to my chief and asked what the new plan was because the Japanese had the high ground. The Japanese kept slowing us down from reaching them. The chief thought of another way to punish the Japanese out of there and get the high ground. The plan was to split into three teams. One goes to the right side and the other goes to the left side.. The left will go help the middle to stretch the Japanese. When my team got in the middle, I was not sorry about what would happen. We take a lot of heavy gun fire for the right to get there. I know that the left side was helped but I felt like it was not doing anything to the Japanese. The right side did what they did and got all Japanese.
After the battle I feel like I did not do a good job of helping my soldiers on the battlefield. Why was it not me who jumped on the grenade? My friend did, and it did not feel right. But the chief put us all together for his speech. The speech was all about what we know to do for our country. The speech put us in a better mood. Why I am battling in Saipan is because Saipan is nearer Japan and America. It can be used to fuel all the planes in the war for America to go to Japan to battle. The Japanese were trying to get the island too but America made a stop then to get the island. I will not give the island to Japan even if I die. That's what I said to my other soldiers that are in the same path. After that battle I stayed at the island to keep the island for America then Japanese. The Japanese will not stop battling me for the island. I was injured when a Japanese soldier shot me in the arm in one of the battles. My injury made me not serve my country any more.
I was sad and mad about what happened to me but after some time I was cool about what happened. I made a book about my life and people made a movie about my life too. There was soldier that lost their lives was 8,000 troop from today. The date of the battle was 15 June 1944, and the battle took place on the southwest side of Saipan. The island got a nickname Death Valley because there were about 18,000 dead bodies from America. There were about 20,000 soldiers at that beach but only 12,000 did live through the battle.
