I am Sandra Cisneros, and I am an author, being a writer has affected my life and impacted it in a good way. I do think that my life has changed when I started writing books. People always ask me, “Sandra, what inspired you to write?” What inspired me to write was the Mexican popular culture, and I would listen to the conversations people would have, I would always record their conversations so I could put them in the book that I wanted to write in the future, and I would always think about how they could relate to me. I have always liked living and being an independent woman.
I published plenty of other books and received a variety of awards from them. On September 22, 2016, I received a National Medal of Arts for my work from president Barack Obama, in total I have received five awards including this one. I sold more than 6 million copies in many different languages of my book called “ The house on mango street”. This book is about a girl that lived in Chicago with her family and she finds it hard to live there because she doesn't enjoy it. In other words, it is about her and her family living in Chicago and how her life goes. I felt really happy and I felt so honored to be getting an award and I thought it was such an amazing experience to be able to go to the White House and meet President Barack Obama! The most recent award I won was “Achieving International Literature.” I received that one in 2019 on February 26 in New York City.
I was so proud of myself for being able to receive more awards and improve on my writing career. On Saturday, March 13, 2019, I won my second award, winning the ¨Chicago Literary Hall of Fame's Fuller Award for Lifetime Achievement¨. I got this one again for writing my most popular book “the house on mango street¨ I was the 9th recipient of the Fuller Award. This award was meant to honor the city's greatest living writers. The most recent book I just wrote was called ¨Martita, I remember you¨. This book is about a story of a Chicago woman who finds a letter written years ago, and she got trapped in a life that she didn't want so she escaped that. I am so grateful for all the awards I got. Thank you to all the people who read my books and made all this possible. To this day I am 66 years old and I am living with my 4 dogs in San Miguel Allende.
