Oversized Permits

An over length, over width, or overweight vehicle or load shall not operate or move on a state highway except by permit as provided in the rules and regulations and C.R.S. 42-4-501 through C.R.S. 42-4-512. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Freight Operations and Permitting Services may, upon application in writing and good cause being shown, issue a single trip, a special or an annual permit authorizing the applicant to operate or move an oversized vehicle or load. All permits shall be issued at the discretion of CDOT Freight Operations and Permitting Services as provided in C.R.S. 42-4-510.

Colorado Cities and Counties Requiring a Permit for Oversize/Overweight

C.R.S. 42-4-511 – Permit standards – state and local reads, in part:

(2)(b) At least 30 days prior to such public hearing, the local authority shall transmit a copy of the proposed ordinance or resolution to the department of transportation for its comments and said department shall make such comments in writing to the local authority prior to such public hearing.


(2)(c) Effective July 1, 1996, any local authority that adopts or has adopted an ordinance or resolution governing permits for the movement of oversize or overweight vehicles or loads shall file a copy of such ordinance or resolution with the department of transportation and the motor carrier services division of the department of revenue.
