Make + Learning = Fun

Strand: Inspiring every digital learner

Presentation Level: Integrate teaching and learning

Presentation Strands: Unleashing the fun in learning

Are you tired of using Kahoot!? Would you like to gamify your quiz and at the same time analyse your students’ learning? In Princess Elizabeth Primary School, we believe that technology can transform how teaching and learning is delivered in the 21st century classroom and bring about joy and depth of learning.

Having collaborated with ETD on innovative projects such as Media Literacy: Preparing Young People for the Future with News-casting and as one of the schools to pilot the Student Learning Space (SLS), the school welcomes and encourages exploration and innovation in pedagogy e.g. integrating maker activities in the lessons. “Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. Knowledge results from a combination of grasping and transforming experience” (Kolb, 1984: 41). Learning by doing has a long history in Experiential Learning and the combination of the natural inclinations of children and the power of learning by doing helps to shift from an educator-centered environment to a learner-centered primary school classroom.

In this session, the presenters will share how lessons in various subjects are given a new lease of life through the use of technology and maker activities in various subjects e.g the use of LED lights in the teaching of the topic on electricity. The participants will learn how the teacher-designers design lessons to promote active learning with technology by capitalising on free Web2.0 tools to complement the use of SLS.
