Lesson Study on Developing Students' mathematical reasoning and communication skills incorporating ICT tools and Talk Moves.

Presentation Level: Integrate teaching and learning

Presentation Strands: Developing authentic learning classroom experiences

In Yew Tee Primary School, we resonate with the outcome goal under the Ministry of Education’s 4th Masterplan for ICT in Education that “Quality Learning in the Hands of Every Learner Empowered with Technology”. With this belief, teachers embarked on a Lesson Study to help P4 students develop mathematical reasoning and communication skills for the deeper understanding of the concept on Fraction harnessing technology. The lesson design integrates the use of ICT tools and Talk Moves to help children make their thinking more visible in the learning of Fraction.

Students collaborate with one another in a teacher-led inquiry task, on ordering of fractions. The use of ICT tools such as Edupuzzle and Nearpod, provides students with the opportunity to work collaboratively in groups to articulate their thoughts and understanding of the concepts in a non-threatening manner. Scaffolding questions in the form of Talk moves were used to probe for reasoning and deepen students' understanding and guides students to reason and communicate their mathematical ideas clearly to their classmates.

During the journey, teachers collaborate via a Professional Learning Community (PLC) structure. The PLC allows teachers to engage in deep discussion, design and facilitate active learning using technology that meet the needs of students and carry out post lesson review to access quality of learning. Guided by the SLS Pedagogical Scaffold, teachers can grow to become designers of learning experiences and environments for quality teaching and learning
