Prefects are everywhere, from morning roll calls and assemblies to patrolling in recess and lunchtime. But what do they actually do?
This year’s Head Prefect is Daniel Chiu (6E), and the Second Head Prefects are Edmund Tam (6C) and Michael Lee (6F). SCOPE interviewed them about what they do in the Prefects’ Council. The answer was twofold: managing the committee prefects, and giving them a helping hand or advice if they faced any difficulties.
Prefects are not only responsible for daily patrolling and maintaining discipline in the morning; they also organise and participate in all major College events, serving as student helpers to ensure they run smoothly. For example, prefects planned the route and guided the visitors in the school tours on the Open Days.
Being representatives of the school, prefects are expected to be responsible, well-mannered, and well-prepared at all times, which is no easy job. Daniel still decided to devote himself to the Council because he was a prefect in primary school, and found serving students and the school rewarding because he was able to pick up different skills, including interpersonal techniques and managing work distribution.
“The prefects definitely help a lot in the school events,” Edmund stated. “Yet, there is still room for improvement. I hope they can voice their opinions so that the Prefects’ Council or even the school can do a better job in providing a healthy learning environment for students.” Michael agreed, expressing his sincere hope that Paulines can maintain their high standard of discipline and strong academic results.
