Morales Bolivia nationalises four electricity power companies

Bolivian police took over four electric companies on May Day

following a nationalisation decree by President Evo Morales

that secures 80 percent of that industry for the state. One of

the firms is partially owned by France's GDF Suez.

Corani is 50 percent owned by Inversiones Econergy Bolivia S.A., a subsidiary of France’s GDF Suez. Guaracachi is 50 percent owned by Britain’s Rurelec PLC, while Valle Hermoso is run by a private Bolivian firm called the Bolivian Generating Group.

During his visit, Morales will therefore talk up opportunities in the exploitation of lithium, an abundant resource in Bolivia. He has indicated he wanted to "accelerate investments" in the soft metal that is used for electric car batteries. Several foreign companies, including France's Bollore, have indicated their interest in exploiting the huge Salar de Uyuni, a salt desert measuring some 12,000 square kilometers (7,456 square miles) in southeastern Bolivia that is home to a third of global lithium reserves.
