You have just been given a large grant to build a brand new school. The catch is that it must be a “green” school – a building that is energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and eco-conscious. You get to choose its location and design the features it will have.
Using what we learned from this chapter you are to design a model of your school and the school grounds in drawing/blueprint form, and include appropriate information (either written on the blueprints or on a separate sheet).
Your design must include the following:
- Location and description of the region (like what makes it suitable for the energies you will use)
- Design of the building and its grounds (the drawing)
- Renewable energy sources (from 18.1) it uses (need 3)
- An explanation of how each of the energies works and how it powers your school
- Ways energy and resources are conserved in the building (need 6)
- An evaluation of the pros and cons of your design and each of the renewable energies you chose
Remember all the things you need for a school: classrooms, cafeteria, gym, offices, library, auditorium, bathrooms, etc.
Extra credit – school name, mascot, and song (even more if you are willing to present your school and perform your song).

- Inclusion of renewable energy sources 9
- Explanation of how the energy works 12
- Energy conservation tips 6
- Evaluation of the pros and cons of your design 6
- Neatness 5
