ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE – Biodiversity Project
Objectives:
- Research and report on an endangered species of your choice.
- Develop a campaign to educate the public about the endangered species.
- Develop a creative means to convince your peers that preserving biodiversity is important.
Procedure:
1. Write a 2 to 4 page research paper (MLA format) on an endangered species of your choice. The report should include (for a total of 50 points):
- General information about the species and its characteristics (10pts)
- Information about its habitat and niche (10pts)
- Population information (how many there are and were) (5pts)
- How the species came to be endangered (10pts)
- Measures being taken (or not) to protect or save the species (10pts)
- References used (books, websites, or articles) Need 3. (5pts)
2. Create a campaign to educate the public about the endangered species (for a total of 50 points):
- Clear and concise information on the species (what it is, why it is endangered, why and how it should be helped) (25pts)
- Clear and concise information on the meaning of biodiversity, why it is important, and why people should care (15pts)
- Colorful, creative, attention-getting, neat (10pts)
- You can create a series of 2-3 flyers, a poster, informative pamphlet, TV/radio commercial, cereal box campaign, clothing design, or any other teacher-approved idea.
Examples of some endangered species include, but are not limited to: African Elephant, Blue Whale, Golden Lion Tamarin, Gorilla, Red Wolf, Asiatic Cheetah, Florida Cougar, Snow Leopard, Giant Panda, Black Rhinoceros, California Condor, Chinese Paddlefish, etc.
