Capacitors are used in the power world for three main purposes: Power Factor Correction, Surge Surpression, & shunting harmonics to clean up dirty power systems. Capacitors are all constructed similarly and come in both single phase and three phase arrangements. their are two basic catagories of insulating methods: Wet & Dry.
There are two basic measurements used to determine the condition of a capacitor: Resistance to Ground and Farads. The insulation resistance is measured using a Megohm Meter preferably at rated voltage. The Farads are measured using a capacitance meter.
The formula for figuring Capacitance from known KVAR, Voltage and Frequency for 3 phase capacitors is:
C=(((KVAR*10^3)/((2*PI*Hz)*(kV^2)))/SQRT(3)
