Biblical Truth: God made a covenant with Abraham because He wanted to create a people for Himself.
Context: In the previous two lessons, God dealt severely with man’s sinfulness by destroying the earth and humanity with a worldwide flood. The events of this lesson take place approximately 3,000 years after God made a covenant with Noah. During the intervening years, the earth was repopulated. At the time these events occurred, people again worshiped gods and idols they had created for themselves instead of worshiping God. Once again, God chose one man with whom to make a covenant. God had a purpose for this covenant: to create a nation to be His own—unlike any other. These people would be God’s special treasure. They would receive His Law and enjoy special favor and fellowship with Him.
Learning Goals:
Understand God’s covenant with Abraham.
