Energy is a basic component that has become part of everything we experience each day. Without energy our lives would change dramatically. It is expected in America to have unlimited energy resources available anytime anywhere. The ubiquitous nature of energy also makes it a target by those that oppose our way of life. A day doesn’t go by that we don’t hear about the damage that our energy use is doing to the environment or we are told that we need to conserve energy because of limited resources.
The truth of the matter is that energy resources exist for our use. We have learned over the last century how to produce, transport and use energy safely, reliably and efficiently. It enhances our lives in extraordinary ways that have made our society the most advanced the world has ever seen. In today’s geopolitical climate, we need to be careful in understanding the process it takes to deliver the benefits of energy that we enjoy everyday.
Origination
Where does our energy come from? Energy is available all around us, the sun, the wind, the rivers and streams, below the ground in Crude Oil, Natural Gas and Coal, and of course through advancements in chemistry through nuclear reaction. There are many other methods being developed to create new energy resources, but no matter where they come from, we have to pay for them. This transaction is important to both parties as it provides the resource supplier with funds for their discretion.
How do we make it usable? Energy resources are not usable unless there is a way to transport it to where it provides the benefit we experience. If an energy source becomes disconnected it creates hardships for those that experience it. Consider a recent interruption to electrical power that you experienced. It affected your schedule, it affected your budget, it caused you potential health risks. It may have caused you injury because you couldn’t see where you were going. It caused you to be aggravated with your situation because there was something you wanted to do, but couldn’t do.
Uncontrolled energy is very dangerous. Energy in uncontrolled environments kill and injure people, destroy assets affect others. Controlled, energy saves lives and produces marvelous results but it must be respected and carefully handled when it is used. We have developed many ways to control and protect ourselves from the threat that energy poses, but houses still burn down and Explosions are still in the news when protective systems are not maintained. The most important thing to remember when using energy is knowing the condition of the equipment you are using.
In my experience I have had the benefit of working with energy being produced, transported and used and have a fundamental understanding of what it takes to keep energy available for the benefits we have come to take for granted. Until recently, most people paid very little attention to energy as it was always there at reasonable prices, now that energy is costing more and becoming a larger percentage investment in our budgets, the public is now starting to pay attention to energy challenges. My core business is related to the safe, reliable and efficient use of energy, but working all over this industry has provided me with a greater understanding of how energy affects geopolitical and geoeconomic issues. view of our energy past, present and future.
