WILLIAM SURTEES was born in Newcastle in 1898 (2Q Newcastle). He enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers and attained the rank of Lance Corporal with the 22nd (Tyneside Scottish) Btn, service no. 22/869.

William was killed in France on the 9 March 1916, aged 18. He was buried in the Erquinghem-Lys Churchyard Extension, France- I-H-7
