The Dormouse Poem

Here is a recipe, records say,

For dormice cooked in the Roman way.

First your rodents are rendered fatter,

Mainly nurtured on nutty matter,

While supervised with especial care

In a jar constructed of earthenware.

When once the creatures are stout enough,

You slay them all, and proceed to stuff

Into each small body some pork, well blended

With other dormice whose lives have ended.

Infuse liquamen (an anchovy brine)

Along with kernels procured from pine;

Then asafoetida add as well,

If not deterred by its garlicky smell:

Sew up the apertures, gently roast

In a moderate over--and serve on toast!
