MARY FLORENCE BAIRD was born in Newcastle On Tyne, Elswick on the 3 December 1855 and died on the 15 December 1946, aged 91.

Mary married ARTHUR LIONEL SMITH in Middlesex on the 29 June 1879.

Arthur was born in Red Lion Square on the 4 December 1851 and died in Oxford on the 12 April 1924, aged 72. He was buried at the Holywell cemetery in Oxford.

In 1881 he was a College Tutor of Modern History M.A. in Oxford. Between 1916-1924, Arthur was the Master of Balliol College in Oxford. This was and still is, one of the Premier Colleges in England and has amongst its graduates many high achievers in areas including literature and politics.

The A. L. Smith Memorial Fellowship in History was founded in 1925 in memory of Arthur Lionel Smith, Master 1916-24.

His wife Mary wrote a book in 1928, simply titled 'Master of Balliol', a biography and remiiniscences about her husband. There was another book written about Arthur & Mary titled 'A goodly heritage' which was a book containing photographs, reminiscence and a genealogical table which was compiled by their family.

This is the house in Broad Street, Oxford where the Masters of Balliol College lived. The first master to break tradition and live out was Christopher Hill in 1965. The building is now used as offices.
