VICTOR MAXWELL OWSTON was born in Pontefract, Yorkshire on the 15 May 1887. He came to Australia but I am unsure at this stage, what year he arrived. He worked as a waiter at the Union Club in Bligh Street, Sydney, New South Wales and it seems that he also lived at the Union Club.

Victor enlisted in te Australian Imperial forces on the 5 August 1915, service no 3392A. He named his sister, Dorothy Annie Owston of 12 Hilltop Avenue, Haarchills, Leeds as his next of kin. his military file describes him as being 26 years 3 months old, 5 feet four and a half inches tall and weighed 126 pounds. He had a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. His religion is listed as Church of England.

By January 1916, Victor was in Cairo, Egypt. On the 16 February 1916, he was allotted to the the 53rd Battalion at Zeitoun in Egypt. on the 19 February his battalion moved into Tel-el-Kebir and two months later on to Ismalia.

On the 19 June 1916, Victor embarked upon the 'Royal George' at Alexandria bound for Marseilles to join the British Expeditionary Forces, arriving on the 28 June 1916.

on the 14 July 1916 he was detached for duty with the 14th Brigade Police in France and rejoined his Battalion several days later.

On the 28 July 1916, he was wounded in action, later returning to his battalion. On the 23 November , Victor was reported wounded and missing in action.

On the 2 September 1917, a board of enquiry found and declared that he had been killed in action. His grave is located in the Ration Farm cemetery, La Charpelle- Darmentierres, France- Grave Memorial ref: VI.D.47. he was 29 years old.
