DR WILLIAM BRINTON (F.R.C.P.F.R.C.S) was born on the 20 November 1823 and died in London on the 17 January 1867, aged 43. He was educated in private schools, firstly in London and later in Birmingham In 1840, he was articled to Mr Thomas Thursfield, surgeon, at Kidderminster. William had been articled for the usual term of 5 years but after 3 years, Dr Thursfield, recognising William's talent convinced friends to send him into the schools and hospitals to complete his medical education.

In 1848 he matriculated at the University of London, taking honours in chemistry. In October the same year he entered King's College; and in 1844 gained the Leathes prize, given chiefly for theological subjects. In 1845 he gained the Warneford prize- also theological. In 1846 , he became senior scholar at King's College, and gained every distinction for which he tried.

He married MARY DANVERS in London on the 22 July 1854. Mary was born in London on the 26 February 1830 and died in London on the 7 May 1891, aged 61

He then became house-physician at King's College Hospital and afterwards demonstrator of anatomy until 1951, when he was elected medical tutor at King's College having been demonstrator for four years.

After marriage, William worked at the Royal Free Hospital until 1860. In 1858 he was elected Lecturer on Forensic Medicine at St Thomas's Hospital . In 1860 he became the sole lecturer of Physiology, and physician to the hospital and resigned from his position with the Royal Free Hospital at this time.

William's specialist field was in the area of stomach disorders and he published several books and papers on this subject. By 1864, Williams health was declining with symptoms of diseased kidney and liver. He was aware of his condition but only told a few of his most intimate friends of his poor health although several of his medical colleagues suspected his poor state of health.

William passed away on Thursday the 17 January at 4.30, having been comatose for twelve hours. A tragically early end to a noble and gifted life.
