TOPHAM BRINTON OBITUARY

ONE of the leading lights of the carpet industry has died.

Topham Brinton, who was chairman of carpet giant Brintons from 1981 to 1991 died peacefully at his home in France after a long illness.

Mr Brinton, 62, was well-regarded beyond the carpet industry.

He was chairman of the CBI West Midlands Region from 1986 to 1988 and president of the Kidderminster and District Chamber of Commerce in its centenary year - 1978.

But he was known for his devotion to the wider carpet industry and spearheading expansion at Brintons through the tough times of the early 80s recession.

A spokesman for the firm said: "Topham will be remembered for his forthright views, his interest and support for technological development within the woven carpet industry and his vision and foresight in developing Brintons' highly successful manufacturing plant in Portugal."

Following his education at Eton College and Brown University, USA, he joined the family firm in 1961.

He became chairman 20 years later following the retirement of his father Sir Tatton Brinton, who was Wyre Forest MP from 1970 to 1979.

During his tenure he helped support district causes and spearheaded the successful £70,000 campaign to build and equip the clinical diagnostic unit at Kidderminster Hospital.

In 1991 he shocked the industry by announcing his retirement due to health reasons.

He later moved to the family home near Avignon, France.

A private family funeral will be held in France followed by a service of thanksgiving in Kidderminster on a date to be fixed.

He is survived by his daughters Catharine and Annabel.
