Eastern Samar, one of the provinces in Region VIII devastated by typhoon Yolanda. Many farmers have huge losses particularly on the coconut, rice and livestock farming industries. These three commodities are the important components of their livelihood as well as their source of extra income and food. The European NGO People In Need (PIN) in Eastern Samar and the Philippine Carabao Center at Visayas State University recently worked out on the possibility of establishing a Carabao-Based Enterprise in the Municipalities of Maydolong and Llorente. The main objective of the collaboration is to empower the farmers to restore and improve their livelihoods through increased production, productivity and marketability of carabao-based products which will improved farmers’ income generating opportunities.
Orientation seminar on Carabao Development Program (CDP) was conducted with prospective dairy farmers in the interior barangays of Canloterio (15kms) and Maytigbao (8kms) away from the national road of Maydolong. The said seminar was one of the initial activities programmed by the PIN staff and as part of the collaborative effort with PCC-VSU which will be followed by a series of organizational meeting to fast track the establishment of the first Dairy Farmers Association in the municipality.
Carabao upgrading activities such as Artificial Insemination services and Bull loan will be given priority in preparation for the Milk Processing as part of the Phase 2 approved projects of PIN for the soon to be first dairy association in the municipality of Maydolong as well as in the province of Eastern Samar. “Phase 2 project was recently approved by the PIN management and will be implemented on January 2017-December 2019” said Mr. Eric Aseo-PIN Project Manager.
