The Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur (PGIS) through the Provincial Veterinary Office headed by Dr. Joey Warren A. Bragado, is working with the PCC at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in sustaining carabao development program in the province by setting up its own dairy buffalo project. The PGIS allocated Php14 million budget for the initial procurement of 20 heifers and 2 purebred bulls, construction of animal facilities and milk processing center, and development of 20-ha pasture area along the hills of barangay Cabangaran, Santa, Ilocos Sur.
The PCC assisted in sourcing out crossbred heifers (with at least 75% Murrah blood) and purebred bulls. The center also provided seed stocks and planting materials of forage grasses and legumes. As of this writing, one cow has calved, and 3 heifers confirmed pregnant. Dr. Bragado is excited to send his staff undergo training on milk collection and handling at the PCC at MMSU in Batac City.
The Dairy Buffalo Project is one of the pet projects of Hon Ryan Luis Singson and Hon DV Savellano, governor and vie-governor of Ilocos Sur, respectively.
