GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The general objectives of this learning unit are:

1. To make you aware that "How To Study" is a very basic competency required of all physicians.

2. To teach you how to use the "How To Study" framework/foundation.

3. To teach you how to be effective and efficient in learning medicine.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After having studied at least the following manuscripts:

2. Management Action Plan of a Physician-to-Be

Vision-Mission-Goal (competencies expected of a physician)

After having participated in a seminar-workshop on "How To Study" using primarily a demonstration-return demonstration learning activity, the student must be able to demonstrate skills in:

3. Self-directed learning

5. Synthesis

6. Organization

7. Giving and receiving feedback

8. Time management

9. Making digital slides for presentation

10. Taking a written examination

LEARNING ACTIVITY PLAN

1st Day – Day 4

MEETING I (Morning) – 0800-0830

Faculty Coordinator meets whole Year Level I class.

- Distributes instructional plan.

- Asks all students to read instructional plan.

- Explains and clarifies plan.

Faculty Coordinator and students make a LEARNING CONTRACT OR AGREEMENT.

INDEPENDENT STUDY on hand-outs – 1 hour

MEETING II (Morning) – 0930-1200

- Clarification of hand-outs. (30 minutes)

DEMONSTRATION OF STEPS IN SESSION I OF PBL (2 hours)

Use exercise on Management of a Patient with a Toothache.

MEETING III (Afternoon) – 1300-1700

INDEPENDENT STUDY (PART OF PBL) – 1300-1500

DEMONSTRATION OF SESSION II OF PBL – 1500-1700

with FEEDBACK AND DISCUSSION

2nd Day – Day 5

MEETING IV (Morning) – 0800-1200

RETURN DEMONSTRATION OF PBL – (SESSION I – INDEPENDENT STUDY – SESSION II)

Use exercise on Management of a Physician’s Responsibility.

MEETING V (Afternoon) – 1300-1500

EXERCISES IN TAKING WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS

Assuming you don’t possess yet all the knowledge, skills and values/attitude in how to study medicine, then your learning issues will, therefore, consist of the following skills:

After you have identified the learning issues, the next question is: what are you going to do to acquire the necessary and expected learning output?

You can read. You can ask resource persons. You can do some hands-on, practicum or exercises. You have the freedom to utilize any strategy or any activity to acquire your expected learning output. Remember, though, your timetable, which is 2 days.
