Glossary of Some Health Indices Terms

Accession – any permanent or temporary addition to employment in the establishment.

Age Dependency Ratio – the percentage of persons in the ages defined as dependent (under 15 and over 65 years) to those in the ages defined as economically productive (15 to under 65 year) in the population.

Consumer Price Index – a measure of change in the average retail prices of goods and services commonly purchased by a particular group of people in a particular area.

Crime Rate – the number of crimes committed per 100,000 population.

Crude Birth rate – the ratio of total number of live births in a given population during the year to the mid-year population during a given period .

Crude Death Rate – the ratio of the number of deaths occurring within one year to the mid-year population.

Employment/Unemployment Rate – the proportion of total number of employed/unemployed persons to the total number of persons in the labor force.

Fertility Rate – refers to the average number of births a woman would have by the end of her reproductive years.

Functional Literacy Rate – a significantly higher level of literacy which includes not only reading and writing skills but also numeracy skills.

Gross Regional Domestic Product – the aggregate gross value added of all productive sectors of a region during an accounting period.

Inflation Rate – the annual rate of change or year-on-year change in the consumer price index.

Labor Force Participation Rate – the proportion of the total number of persons in the labor force to the total population 15 years old and over.

Life Expectancy at Birth – an estimate of the average number of additional years a person can expect to live.

Participation Rate – the ratio between the enrolment in the school-age range to the total population of that age range.

Population Density – average number of inhabitants/persons per square kilometer of land area.

Population Growth Rate – measure of the annual growth in population stock caused by births and deaths and international migration using the censal years as reference period.

Poverty Threshold – the minimum income required or the minimum amount to be spent to satisfy the nutritional requirements (2,000 calories) and other basic needs.

Poverty Incidence of families – proportion of poor families to the total number of families.

Poverty incidence of Population – proportion of poor population to the total population.

Separation – termination of employment in the establishment.

Sex Ratio – the ratio between males and females in a population expressed in number of males per 100 females.

Simple Literacy Rate – Ability of person to read and write with understanding a simple message in any language or dialect.

Visible Underemployment Rate – employed persons who worked less than 40 hours during the reference week and wanted additional hours for work.

Infant Mortality Rate – no. of infant mortalities per 1000 livebirths x 100

Maternal Mortality Ratio – no. of maternal deaths during pregnancy per 1000 livebirths x 100
