IDENTIFYING ONE'S GOALS AND COMMITMENT

IDENTIFYING ONE'S PROGRAM OF STUDIES

I. SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

1. Identify existing conditions

Assess the actual existing conditions of the field of

service (doing or expected to do general surgery in a government

hospital) where you are actually or will be involved. Some

questions that you may ask yourself are:

1. What exists?

2. What are the available material resources (operating room

facilities, training in general surgery, etc.)?

3. What are the available or possible human resources or

potential?

4. What seems to work advantageously in the actual set-up?

5. What seems to conflict or does not work advantageously?

2. Analyze reasons for existing conditions.

Analyze the reasons for any incongruency identified in the

present conditions (after no. 1 is completed).

3. Identify ideal conditions or dreams.

With a more positive note, picture what could be, according

to you, an ideal situation or, what should be.

4. Identify needs to change conditions.

Identify what is needed to bring about the desirable

conditions or the need.

5. Identify constraints and resources.

In order to overcome the danger of embracing too much or

wanting to change everything at once, it is good to study the

material, physical and human constraints that are existing.

Identify these.

6. Choose priorities.

A preference has to be indicated. This is called choosing

priorities. Do so taking into consideration the ideal, the

resources, and the constraints identified in the previous steps.

II. GOAL AND COMMITMENT

1. Identify your present role in your field of service.

2. Identify your functions.

With a role, one has functions (responsibilities and tasks)

to perform. What are your present functions?

3. Identify future roles.

You have reached the step when you must look forward and

identify the future role you expect to exercise.

4. Identify future functions.

Similarly, try to delineate the functions you could perform

in this future role.

5. Describe goals and future commitment.

III. PROGRAM OF STUDIES

1. Identify needs to achieve goals and commitment.

Once your future goals and commitment are clearly

identified, you should realize that some needed elements to

achieve these are lacking. What are these?

2. Identify in TUTORIALS IN GENERAL SURGERY means to achieve

goals.

Identify which areas and modules in the TUTORIALS IN GENERAL

SURGERY that could help you to better achieve your goals and

future commitment. Be specific. Feel free to list down areas

and modules not formally included in the TUTORIAL curriculum but

which could fall under ELECTIVES.

3. Trace personal program of studies.

Take into consideration the curriculum of TUTORIALS IN

GENERAL SURGERY, present field of service, and learning style.

4. Project time lines.
