I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

A 4-year-course in General Surgery which is

problem-, competency- and community-based.

II. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the participant must be

able to:

1. Solve the surgical health problems of a

community.

2. Manage any patient with a general surgical

health problem.

3. Demonstrate self-directed learning.

4. Demonstrate skills in surgical education.

5. Demonstrate managerial skills.

6. Demonstrate skills in doing surgical research.

7. Pass the Philippine Board of Surgery

examination.

III. MAIN DOMAINS OF GENERAL SURGERY

1. Head and Neck

2. Breast

3. Abdomen and Hernia

4. Skin and Soft Tissue

IV. PREREQUISITES TO THE COURSE

The applicant must

1. Have passed the Philippine Board of Medicine

Examination.

2. Have a license from the Professional

Regulation Commission to practice medicine in

the Philippines.

3. Have a hospital base where he can actually

manage surgical patients either primarily or

secondarily as assistant or as trainee.

4. Understand fully the objectives of the

Tutorials in General Surgery Course and pledge

to achieve them.

5. Be fully motivated to finish the Tutorials in

General Surgery Course.

6. Not be physically and mentally incapacitated

to take the Tutorials in General Surgery

Course.

V. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PASS THE COURSE

The participant must

1. Attend and participate actively in all the

prescribed tutorial sessions of the course.

2. Fulfill all the requirements of the Philippine

Board of Surgery as far as training for

general surgery is concerned (Residents'

logbook; required operations; conferences,

etc.).

3. Take the Philippine College of Surgeons' In-

Service Examinations at least two (2) times

during the 4-year course.

4. Fulfill all the other requirements of the

Tutorials in General Surgery Course (Reports;

case presentations; critique papers; etc.)

5. Pass the comprehensive examination of the

Tutorials in General Surgery Course.

6. Pass the certifying examinations of the

Philippine Board of Surgery.

TUTORIALS IN GENERAL SURGERY

GENERAL MECHANICS OF SESSIONS

1. A session is held every three (3) months at a

designated center of learning, which is a hospital.

2. A session runs from 2 to 2 1/2 days.

3. The basic format of a session utilizes a problem-based

learning process in a small group of learners.

4. A session usually consists of:

Patient management problems

Small group discussion

Skills teaching and learning

5. Other learning activities may be added such as

Case presentation and discussion

(including morbidity and mortality review)

Journal article critique

Debates

Lecturettes

Independent Study

Projects

Others - depending on the objectives of the session
