LEARNING OBJECTIVES

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The general objectives of this learning unit are:

1. To make you aware that management is a very basic competency required of all physicians.

2. To teach you how to use the "Management" framework/foundation in several responsibilities of a physician.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Given several responsibilities of a physician, the student must be able to:

1. Write an outline illustrating the various processes or steps in the management of each responsibility;

2. Afterwards, compare all the management plans citing the similarities and the differences.

Responsibility 1: Managing a Patient with a Health Problem

Scenario:

You are the physician assigned to man a medical clinic. One day, a 10-year-old boy is brought to the clinic by his mother. The mother tells you her child just has a bad fall while biking. You see the boy crying in pain with a swollen deformed right forearm.

1.1 With the above scenario in mind, fill up the following items that will form part of your mental plan as a physician managing the patient.

Responsibility 2: Presenting in a Medical Conference

Scenario:

You are a physician practicing in a community. One day, the medical society in your community invites you to present and discuss a patient of yours who has a very unusual disease. You are asked to share your experience so that the other physicians will learn. You are alloted one hour for your presentation. You have two weeks to prepare for the presentation.

Responsibility 3: Managing a Rural Health Unit

Scenario:

You have been recently appointed the municipal health officer of Community X. One of your tasks is to manage the rural health unit (RHU) in your community. Presently working in the unit are a nurse, a midwife, and a sanitary inspector.

3.1 With the above scenario in mind, outline the steps you will do in managing the RHU. Describe briefly the things that you will do in each step.

3.2 After one year of managing the RHU, how will you determine whether you have achieved your goal or objectives or not?

3.3 When does improvement come in in such a scenario? Give an example of an improvement or a situation in which improvement can be done.

Responsibility 4: Solving the Health Problems of a Community

Scenario:

You have been recently appointed the municipal health officer of Community X. Your goal is to solve the health problems of the community. You have a rural health unit as your headquarter. You have a nurse, a midwife, and a sanitary inspector under your supervision. You have your community (local government as well as nongovernmental organizations) as your resource.

4.1 With the above scenario in mind, outline the steps you will do in solving the health problems of Community X. Describe briefly the things that you will do in each step.

4.2 After the time alloted for implementation of your program has expired, how will you determine whether you have achieved your goal or objectives or not?

4.3 When does improvement come in in such a scenario? Give an example of an improvement or a situation in which improvement can be done.

Responsibility 5: Conducting a Health Research

Scenario:

You are the municipal health officer of Community X. You want to solve the health problems of your community. You thought of using multisectoral cooperation and public health education as the main strategy. At the same time that you are going to use this strategy to solve the health problems of your community, you decide that it is worthwhile to conduct a research on this. You want to test whether a combined multisectoral cooperation and public health education is an effective and efficient way of solving the health problems of your community. In short, you are going to do an interventional community health research.

5.1 With the above scenario in mind, outline the steps you will do in conducting the community health research starting from the formulation of research protocol to end of research. Describe briefly the things that you will do in each step.

5.2 How will you determine whether you have achieved your goal or objectives of conducting a community health research?

5.3 When does improvement come in in such a scenario? Give an example of an improvement or a situationin which improvement can be done.
