PBL is the learning that occurs in the process of solving a problem. Experience has shown that this is mainly how human beings learn to live life and it is undeniably the best way of learning especially in terms of retention and recall of knowledge and skills.

Self-directed Learning

Rationale

    • In terms of knowledge-contents,

        • impossible for teacher to teach everything;

        • impossible for student to learn everything.

            • Note: definition of learning – change in behavior or disposition persisting over a long period of time

    • Learning spans from the cradle to the grave.

Self-directed learning

Not simply being STUDIOUS!

Must have:

    1. Awareness of competencies required of profession

    2. Self-assessment of needs

    3. Formulation of study plan

    4. Implementation of plan

    5. Evaluation

Framework of Knowledge

    • can facilitate study

    • can be used for any kind of problem-solving and decision-making

    • can be used to learn whatever is necessary to practice effectively throughout life

    • serves as a foundation which should be developed and mastered during the training period
